Rates for postal services go up |04 January 2020
Due to the rise in the cost, among other expenses, of collecting, sorting out and distributing letters and other packages, the Seychelles Postal Services will as from February this year increase its rates now that it has been approved by the cabinet of ministers.
In a scheduled meeting chaired by President Danny Faure on Thursday last week at State House, cabinet approved, among a number of legal policies and memoranda, for the review of the postal rates.
Speaking at a cabinet debriefing last Friday, the deputy secretary for legal and institutional affairs, Johnny Bastienne, explained that, for instance, the rates for the local mail will increase by R1 for the first 20 grammes with an additional R1 for any supplementary 20 grammes. The overseas mail will increase by R2 for the first 20 grammes with an additional R2 for any supplementary 20 grammes. The rates were last reviewed in 2016.
Mr Bastienne further said that the Seychelles Postal Services had also proposed to the cabinet of ministers for the legislation for rental of post office boxes to be officially gazetted, as it had never been done in the past, and which was also considered.
The postal box tariff will remain the same, meaning R1500 for those situated in Victoria, R1200 for those situated in Providence and Beau Vallon while the others situated at Perseverance, Anse Royale, Baie St Anne Praslin, Grand Anse Praslin and La Digue at R600.
The accompanying table shows the changes in the rates.
