The prison choir represented by female and male inmates from Montagne Posée prison lent their voices for two special events on the last weekend before Christmas day.

On Friday evening, December 20, 2019, the inmate choir joined ranks with Sesel Paster Lannwit singing Christmas carols at La Passerelle as well as in front of the Heritage Museum in Victoria. Joining the choir were staff of the prison along with their family members.

On Saturday evening, December 21, 2019, the inmate choir following an invitation from Murielle Laporte, the administrator for the Home for the Elderly at Au Cap, entertained a number of residents from both Au Cap and Anse Royale.

While the Mayor of Victoria, David Andre, was part of the audience in Victoria, at Au Cap, Hon. Stephen Pillay, member of the Seychelles National Assembly for the district, and Fatima Marie, district administrator for Au Cap, joined in to listen and appreciate the inmate choir.

The inmate choir, recently formed, have been practicing for a number of weeks prior to their two big performances. The choir falls under the mandate of the Probation and Welfare Department and under ‘Project Phoenix’. The choir also performed a few carols at a special Christmas mass celebrated by Bishop Denis Wiehe on Saturday morning at the Montagne Posée prison auditorium.

“We trust that those in attendance for our two special performances the last week-end before Christmas saw value in the performances of the inmates,” said Elsa Nourrice, head of the Probation and Welfare Department, Seychelles Prison Service.

The prison inmate choir will continue to perform and will be part of the rehabilitation efforts of the Department of Prisons for 2020.
