Creole Institute, Prison Service announce first community project for 2020

(L to r): Ms Anacoura, Mr Zialor, Mrs Flora Ben-David, Mr St Ange and Ms Nourrice during their meeting yesterday morning at the office of the superintendent in Victoria

The Creole Institute of Seychelles (CIS) and the Seychelles Prison Service (SPS) yesterday met to confirm and agree on a plan of action for next year that would see the prison service engaging with the CIS, seen as the first community project being announced for the year 2020.

It should be recalled that on October 25, 2019, the prison authority, following a working visit by district administrators from Au Cap, Anse Aux Pins, Pointe Larue, Anse Royale, Anse Boileau, as well as the member of the National Assembly representing Anse Boileau, Honourable Phillip Arissol, announced that it would be working and assisting those communities.

As for the understanding between the CIS which was represented at the meeting by its chief executive, Marie Flora Ben-David and CIS senior research officer, Gilliana Anacoura, the superintendent of prisons, Raymond St Ange, the principal probation officer, Elsa Nourrice and Donald Zialor, the rehabilitation officer within the programme, it was agreed that while the prison with its identified inmates would help with landscaping, maintenance and gardening at the institute, the CIS would assist the prison with its literacy efforts for the inmates.

Further announcements with the districts will be made shortly.

The aim of the prison authority is to have inmates who have enrolled on the rehabilitation programme, known as ‘Project Phoenix’, give back to society by carrying out volunteer work in the communities.
