The National Museum of History yesterday hosted parents and children who have participated in the educational programmes run by the National Museum of History and the Natural History Museum over the course of the year, for a special exhibition of their works, and the presentation of certificates to the participants.

The customary exhibition displays to parents, sponsors, and other stakeholders the achievements of the two museums over the year and included slideshows of pictures from visits to historical sites, national monuments, trips to different islands, hikes to the various nature trails as well as other activities in which the kids participated, such as tree planting.

It must be noted that this year’s exhibition was extra special as it is the first time that the National Museum of History holds its first educational exhibition since its re-opening last year.

In her opening address, director of National Museum Beryl Ondiek spoke of the important role of museums in educating the younger generations and the role of the museum clubs in instilling in participants appreciation for the country’s natural, historical and cultural heritage.

“During the year museums offer a programme of different activities that create opportunities for the younger generation to express their creativity. The more times the students visit the museums for their schooling, the more they are likely to develop their education and become well informed and well-versed individuals, making their communities better for the future,” she said.

“More than ever, young people need the chance for self-reflection, to think about the world and place in which they live, and they should seize the opportunities provided by museums which are places of excitement and wonder, that can inspire interest and creativity in all children and young people,” she stated.

Prior to the unveiling of the exhibits, most of which were slideshows depicting the various activities the museum clubs have been engaged in, all the participants were presented with prizes and certificates for their outstanding efforts and commitment to the respective programmes.

Tokens of appreciation were also presented to the sponsors of the programmes, namely, Hilton Labriz Silhouette and Spa, Antoinette Marie-Therese, Print It and Stephen Eliza.

Following the presentation of certificates and tokens, the principal secretary in the department of Culture, Cecile Kalebi, officially opened the exhibition.
