President Danny Faure held bilateral discussions with the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, and the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, QC, on the sidelines of the 9th ACP Summit of Heads of State and Government held recently in Nairobi, Kenya.

In his meeting with PM Holness, President Faure thanked him for his support in engaging with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in pushing for a Vulnerability Resilience Index to better assess the eligibility of small island developing states (Sids) for Official Development Assistance.

Both countries agreed to share a close engagement during the negotiation for a new ACP-EU partnership agreement, with the aim of promoting the unity of the African, Caribbean, Pacific Group of States and collaborating on Sids issues at the ACP level.

On his turn, Prime Minister Holness thanked President Faure for initiating the meeting which allowed them to discuss matters of mutual concern.

He acknowledged the role Seychelles played in ocean governance and expressed the wish to develop a partnership in this area.

He showed interest in learning from Seychelles’ experience in the Debt for Nature Conservation Initiative.

Prime Minister Holness thanked President Faure for Seychelles’ continued support of Jamaica’s candidatures internationally.

Both leaders committed to meeting more often to continue the renewed collaboration.

With PM Mottley, President Faure reviewed the outcome of the deliberations during the summit.

The two leaders discussed cooperation in the blue economy, ocean governance, climate change and small islands developing states (Sids). They agreed on concrete ways of working together, of exchanging experiences and information.

They exchanged examples of how they are affected by sea level rise, ocean acidification, coastal erosion, ground water salination and contamination.

The leaders discussed strategies to achieve common positions on these subjects. They discussed opportunities to bring the fight for a vulnerability and resilience index for Sids to a finality.

President Faure offered to share the experience of Seychelles on macro-economic reforms given the current challenges that Barbados is experiencing.

Both countries agreed to strengthen their collaboration and work towards greater alliances within the ACP and the Commonwealth.
