Venerable Stenio Andre elected Bishop of Mauritius |07 December 2019

Venerable Joseph Stenio Andre has been elected to become the next Bishop of Mauritius, the Anglican Church of the Indian Ocean has announced.

The decision was taken at the Episcopal elections held on St Andrew’s Day on November 30, 2019, at St Clement’s Church in Curepipe, Mauritius.

In a communiqué sent by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of the Indian Ocean, the Most Reverend James Wong Yin Song has said that Bishop Stenio Andre is the successor of Bishop Ian Ernest.

Bishop Ernest has moved to Rome as director of the Anglican Centre and personal representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Pope.

The election process was chaired by the Most Reverend James Wong Yin Song, Primate of the Anglican Church of the Indian Ocean and Bishop of Seychelles.

Bishop Stenio Andre was born in Rodrigues on August 17, 1960, is married to Marie Laurance Agathe and they have one son. He was trained at St Paul’s Theological College Mauritius and Westhill College Birmingham.

He was ordained deacon in Rodrigues in 1983 and as a priest in 1985 in the United Kingdom (UK) by the Bishop of Southwark. He served in the Diocese of Seychelles from 1987 to 1989 and returned to Mauritius where he served as parish priest at St James Cathedral. He was appointed Archdeacon in 2009.

In 2016 he was transferred to St Paul Church in Vacoas. He has served on the board of commissioners for many years and on the board of governors of St Andrew’s School. He has also been active on the ecumenical sphere and acted as honorary chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers and also as a bible translator.

Bishop Stenio Andre will be consecrated at a ceremony which will be fixed at a later date.
