Seychelles attends UN climate change conference in Madrid

The UN Climate Change Conference COP25 in Madrid, Spain kicked off on Monday December 2 with an urgent call to make serious progress on climate action over the next two weeks.

With climate change impacts becoming ever more dangerous and apparent, COP25 must convey to the world a firm determination to change course.

The key objective of the conference is to reach progress on key items with respect to the full operationalisation of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, notably on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement relating to carbon markets and continuing to boost ambition in preparation for new and revised national climate action plans due next year of which Seychelles has made considerable progress.

The Seychelles delegation at the conference is being led by Minister Wallace Cosgrow from the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, assisted by his principal secretary for energy and climate change Wills Agricole, Ambassador Ronny Jumeau, chief executive of the Seychelles Meteorological Authority (SMA) Vincent Amelie, chief executive of SeyCCAT Angelique Pouponneau, climate change negotiator George Uzice, director general for Environment Education, Jeannette Larue.

 

Side-events

The delegation so far is taking part in several side-events notably Nature-based solution: Integrating Coastal Ecosystem in 2020 NDCs, Transforming Tourism for Climate Action, Climate Science and extreme weather events, Ocean, Climate and Biodiversity nexus and African Union Climate Commissions.

 

First ever Green Champion Award

PS Agricole has been selected as the First-everGreen Climate Fund (GCF) Green Champion award for the Transformational Country Category. The award ceremony will take place tomorrow, Saturday December 6, 2019 at COP25, Madrid, Spain.

The first GCF Green Champions awards recognise outstanding individuals and organisations in a developing country driving climate transformation, making notable progress in pursuing national interaction with the GCF. The awards promote initiatives that stand as examples of environmental, social and business-led commitments of climate action. This includes activities limiting or reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage adaptation to climate impacts. There are six categories as follows:

  1. Climate Youth Champion
  2. Climate Gender Champion
  3. Climate Community Champion
  4. Transformational Country Champion
  5. Climate Entrepreneur Champion
  6. Climate Lifetime Achievement Champion
