The launch of the orientation programme took place on Friday at the Seypec House, New Port, in the presence of the chief executive of Seypec, Conrad Benoiton, and parents of the trainees.

“The training that you have gone through is the first step of your career; Seypec has invested heavily in you and it reflects the vision of Seypec for an all-Seychellois crew to man all the Seypec tankers by 2022. All previous cohorts have shown tremendous determination that validates the investment that the national petroleum company keeps devoting to this project,” said Mr Benoiton.

He added that their performances up to now confirm that they have what it takes to be great seamen and this further encourages Seypec to continue investing in future young Seychellois cadets to join this training programme. This is our genuine pledge for the advancement of our young Seychellois as professional and successful mariners.

“We are more committed to building a team of internationally trained and qualified Seychellois mariners, these young seafarers will now receive boost through international exposure onboard our international tankers and will henceforth integrate a global oil shipping sector,” continued Mr Benoiton.

He ended by thanking the Seychelles Maritime Academy for skills acquisition and deployment.

During their times at Cinec the students followed a preparatory course in navigation and engineering designed to equip them with overall knowledge of the understandings on board a vessel. They also followed a two-week course in tanker familiarisation at the same institution.

Among the thirteen students Julio Banane received distinction for excellence in navigation and excellence engineering awards and best student in engine workshop. He also received the award for best all round student. Best student for seamanship practical was awarded to Shaun Hoareau and Davis Agathine.

The boys noted that it was a challenging training but with perseverance they managed to accomplish great results. They also thanked Seypec for giving them this opportunity to kick-start their careers.
