Soroptimists’ Beach Walk set for October 10 |05 October 2019

The Soroptimist International Club of Victoria will be organising its annual Beach Walk at Beau Vallon on October 10, 2019 from 5pm.

This year the club is adding a special touch to the walk to make it more memorable for regular participants.

The meeting point for all participants will be at the Sable D’Or luxury apartments, Beau Vallon. The club will also decorate this area with pink bunting, with the aspiration of doing its part towards realising a plastic free Seychelles, for sustainable development. The bunting serves as an alternative from plastic balloons which is more environmentally friendly.

The beach walk itself will be by the beach infront of the Mahek Restaurant at the Coral Strand Hotel and participants will be able to walk up and down the beach freely in support of breast cancer awareness.

“We are also encouraging businesses in Beau Vallon to decorate their place of business in pink,” the organisers urge.

Everyone is invited to participate in this year’s walk and reminded to dress in pink, in solidarity with family of victims and survivors of breast cancer.

Members of the public are also welcome to donate funds to the club for such related projects on that day.

Soroptimist is a leading global women's voluntary organisation. It started in 1921, in California, by Violet Richardson and other professional women who wanted equal pay for men and women.

This international platform now has close to 90,000 members in over 100 countries.

The word comes from Latin: ‘soror’ means ‘sisters’ and ‘optima’ means ‘best’. Therefore, the 2 words put together means ‘the best for sisters’.

The primary focus of this International Club is transforming the lives of women, girls and children nationally and globally through education, empowerment and enabling initiatives. Our key words are Educate, Empower and Enable. This is because when women are educated and empowered, they become the driving force of the family and in the community.

In Seychelles, the Soroptimist International Club of Victoria has 22 active members. These are professionals who are willing to give up their time for the benefit of others in need. To date the club has spearhead many community projects.

In recent years the club noticed that one of the most common types of cancer being diagnosed was breast cancer. Thus the club decided on a new mission of Breast Cancer Awareness so that all women will look after their health and insist on having a mammogram done for early detection.

With the money collected over the years, the Soroptimist Club of Victoria have spearheaded the renovation of the oncology ward in the Seychelles Hospital together with Cancer Concern and Round Table.

The club now intends to raise more funds for specialised equipment and training of nurses.
