Since its inception twenty years ago the Senior Citizens Association has focused on the wellbeing of the elderly in Seychelles.

Yesterday afternoon, the department of local government awarded a group of 14 elderly citizens who have been active in the association.

The ceremony, held at the Harbour Light restaurant, ICCS, was attended by the principal secretary for local government Marie-Celine Vidot, who noted in her address to the attendees that one of the main aims of the senior association is to defend the rights of the elderly and provide a better quality of life for all of them.

“Today we are awarding a group of men and women who have given their time and energy to volunteer in their community and made sure that the elderly are not left behind,” said PS Vidot.

She ended her speech by thanking everyone involved in the association and assured them the continued partnership of the local government department.

The new committee of the elderly association was also introduced yesterday. The new committee will continue the work of the previous one and will serve a three-year mandate.

Rosemary Amade, who serves as the vice-chairperson on the new committee, noted that their new mandate will be to bring more people in the association. She also noted that one of the biggest issues they have is the lack of area to conduct their activities.

“We have been promised a building many years ago that would serve as an area for us but we have yet to see it,” said Mrs Amade.

Jeanne-D’Arc Gerry, who was an awardee and served as the chairperson of the senior association since 2001, said that her biggest accomplishment in these 20 years has been that every district has a functioning senior citizens club.

“I would be very grateful if we could have our own senior citizen centre as we will be able to organise more activities,” said Mrs Gerry.

She noted that even if she is stepping down as chairperson of the association, she will still be very active.
