The government will do all that is necessary to support national carrier Air Seychelles in its court case so it rises to its responsibilities and ensure that it continues to function in a financially independent way, Minister for Transport, Antony Derjacques, has said.

He was speaking following a meeting chaired by President Wavel Ramkalawan yesterday at State House to come up with solutions on how to move forward with the court case whereby APEX Corporate Trustees (UK) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of Seychelles to declare the national airline insolvent and to wind up its operations.

Other than the head of state, the meeting was also attended by Vice-President Ahmed Afif; Designated Minister Jean-François Ferrari; Minister for Finance, Economic Planning and Trade Naadir Hassan; along with other parties, including the board and management of Air Seychelles who through a long serious discussion achieved a consensus on how to move forward, so that Air Seychelles continues to operate as a commercially viable airline.

As a way of moving forward, the government wants to enter into a dialogue with the petitioners and in this line, President Ramkalawan has appointed a high-level committee headed by Designated Minister Ferrari, Minister Derjacques and Minister Hassan, along with four board members who will be responsible for the negotiations with APEX Corporate Trustees (UK).

This, Minister Derjacques said, will hopefully bring a positive output and the airline can move forward.

Minister Derjacques also reassured all stakeholders that all the services at the Seychelles International Airport will continue without any disruption, allowing all the airlines to operate safely from Seychelles.

He also reaffirmed President Ramkalawan and the government’s commitment to take all necessary measures to support the employees of Air Seychelles.

On behalf of Air Seychelles, board chairperson Veronique Laporte said she is very satisfied with the way the meeting went and the conclusion was very positive, especially the decisions taken.

She thanked the management and staff of Air Seychelles for their continuous dedication and commitment, despite the uncertainties that they have been through and also encouraged them to continue in the same manner without getting sidetracked.
