SMSA initiates search and rescue operation for missing crew |05 August 2021

The Seychelles Coast Guard has launched a search and rescue operation since 01:55 hours early Wednesday morning after receiving report of a missing crew member on board fishing vessel ‘MARLIZ’, the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority has said.

According to a press release dated August 4, 2021 from the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA), fishing vessel ‘MARLIZ’ left Port Victoria with three crew members ‒ two males and one female ‒ on board on August 3, 2021 around 2.30pm for fishing purposes and was escorted back to Port Victoria by Seychelles Coast Guard around 1pm, yesterday.

The Seychelles Coast Guard received a call from Central Police Station stating that fishing vessel ‘MARLIZ’ was requesting for coast guard assistance, due to the fact that one personnel was missing on board.

The position of the vessel at the time was ……15Nm NW (northwest) of Mahe and the missing crew, a male member, was last seen between 8.30pm and 10.30pm on August 3, 2021.

However, at the moment, the cause of the incident remains unknown.

“The authority will continue the search and rescue operation making use of all assets available, while sending out messages to other vessels in the vicinity to keep a sharp lookout,” Captain Joachim Valmont, chief executive of SMSA

Seychelles Coast Guard patrol vessels PS Etoile and fast respond boat FRB 218 were joined by Seychelles Air force Dornier CG011 to continue the search and rescue operation which is still ongoing.
