Cycling - Gerry wins two-stage road race |22 August 2017
Christopher Gerry claimed victory in last weekend’s 218.7km road race which was split into two stages.
Gerry, in fact, did not win any of the two stages, but his cumulative time was better than those of all the other cyclists, thus earning him the win.
Stage one was a 124.2km road race and here, the riders had to pedal from the ex-Reef Hotel at Anse Aux Pins towards Takamaka, up to Anse Boileau and make a U-turn at the Barbarons Hill-top. They then returned to ex-Reef Hotel via the same route before going to Bel Ombre. From Bel Ombre they pedalled to Victoria via Anse Etoile and ten headed back to Anse Aux Pins where the race ended.
It was Xerxes Larue and Miguel Mathieu who were the fastest in this race, where they finished in 3 hours, 43 minutes 20 minutes seconds (3h43:20) to take joint first positions, just ahead of Christopher Gerry and Fadi Confiance, who both ended the race after 3h43:21.
In stage two, a 94.5km road race, the riders raced from Stad Linite towards Anse Etoile and made a U-turn at the roundabout near the Savoy Resort at Beau Vallon, then they made their way back to Victoria and headed to Takamaka via the east coast. They then headed to Port Glaud via the western coast and finished the race at Morne Blanc.
In a time of 3h14:05, Dominic Arrisol, who was absent in the first stage, finished in first place and was followed by Gerry in second position in a time of 3h18.07, while Larue was third after finishing in 3h18.31.
The results meant that Gerry led the overall standings with a total time of 7h01:28, just a few seconds ahead of Laure who finished second with a time of 7h01:51 and Miguel Mathieu was third in 7h04:34.
