The elderly enjoy Christmas Carols |24 December 2016

Some members of the Young Citizens movement have brought some Christmas cheer to a group of 18 residents from Au Cap and Pointe Larue homes for the elderly.

This came through performances of Christmas carols that took place on Thursday afternoon at the Seychelles Trading Company’s (STC) hypermarket courtesy of Marie-Nella Azemia, who won the runner-up prize for the Volunteers Award.

With the R50,000 prize money she won, she decided to treat the elderly living closest to her by hiring a bus to transport the two groups of elderly to the hypermarket to enjoy the carols  and at the same time get the chance to visit the place as many have not done so before.

As a Christmas gift, the elderly enjoyed a delicious meal at the hypermarket’s food area and each received a bed cover to take home.

Following their meal, the bus drove them around town which allowed them to see the Christmas lights and take photographs as souvenirs.

Mrs Azemia has been a volunteer for the past 21 years and she works tirelessly to help the less fortunate people in our communities.

Quoting Brahma Kumaris she said, “Give those who do not have when you do have, as I believe that you should share and spread love around especially during this festive season.”

The director for the homes of the elderly, Sylvia Stravens who accompanied the residents, said these little treats are welcome by the homes.

“The residents are well treated in the homes and they do not lack anything except for the constant loneliness, so these generous acts are very welcome by us to make our residents feel remembered and appreciated,” she said.

Two Au Cap residents, Ivana Cecile and Leslie Techer, expressed their gratitude and happiness.

“If she didn’t love us she would not have done this for us so I would like to thank her and may God protect her and she spends a great Christmas and New Year,” said Ms Cecile.

“I am overwhelmed with joy and I think we would all appreciate if we could do this every Christmas,” said Mr Techer.
