National Day Expo 2016 - Technology and innovation on show |01 July 2016

From June 26 to 29, all eyes were squarely focused on the National Day Expo, where the public got the chance to learn more about various businesses, innovations and other exciting products and activities.

We decided to take a stroll through the Expo ourselves, where we were fortunate enough to learn more about a few new innovative technologies being brought to our shores or are already established here. So, we thought we’d share with you some of the more impressive we managed to see, just in case you missed them.

Dom’eau brings the purest water to your home

Yes, a lot of people hate drinking tap water. That is the reality in a lot of homes and there are various reasons why. For example, I myself find that each time it rains, my tap water turns into a mud-brown colour. Now, I’m not drinking that.

However, Dom’eau, a company originating from Reunion Island, has the solution. The company offers water purification systems directly to your home, where you can enjoy the purest water all day long.

On show at the Expo was the Dom’eau Crystal, which is a small water purifier that can easily be fitted under your normal kitchen sink. The agent present at the company’s kiosk, Alexandre De France, explained that the company just began operating in Seychelles last Sunday and is based at Providence.

He explained that the water purification system not only eliminates germs and other microbes from the water, but it also cleans the water’s colour itself, ensuring you get the clearest and cleanest water quality for daily consumption. Thus the name, Crystal.

SpaceTracker – transport management gone futuristic

The name SpaceTracker itself sounds like a space-ship from the Star Trek universe, but it is in fact the name of transport management project being done by local company Space 95.

So many companies nowadays have a big fleet of vehicles and sometimes it is hard to keep track of all their activities. Space 95’s SpaceTracker perhaps has the answer.

As Andy Noel explained to us, there are plenty of products produced by the company to help combat various issues, such as vandalism, abuse and other such issues.

SpaceTracker offers companies the ability to keep track at all times of the vehicles through real-time GPS tracking, which is a service already being used by the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC).

Other techs services being offered include a driver ID, which will enable to keep track of which driver uses each car, while fuel sensors will keep the administration officer aware of which vehicle is in need of refuelling and if there are any nuisance taking place.

Mr Noel also explained that they are working on an alcohol consumption sensor, which will be able to detect if any alcohol is being used in the vehicle and send an alert to the officer in charge for action. There are much more being offered through the SpaceTracker system and we will bring more details soon.

While those two were the highlights of our short visit to the Expo, we also managed to see some smaller stalls, one of which was showcasing home security products, which include garage doors that are remotely controlled and come in various patterns and colours. Window blinds were also being shown, where blinds for offices, shops and homes made of various materials were on display.

The ever-present automotive companies were also around, with their main focus being on unveiling the new arrivals and of course, their brand new hybrid vehicles.

Last year saw the arrival of the popular Honda Vezel Hybrid SUV, but this year Kia has showcased its new Niro model, which is the first Hybrid brought to Seychelles from the popular Korean automakers.

Hyundai also used the expo to unveil a hybrid car and this is the new Ioniq, which attracted a lot of attention.

The following are the pictures of some of the exhibits.
