Poetry exhibition showcases different cultures of art |25 May 2016

A poetry exhibition under the theme Opinion has been organised to show different cultures of art through the means of poetry, and also to advertise Africa and its beauty using only words.

Organised by Bling Bling Poetry Association in collaboration with the FetAfrik 2016 committee and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the exhibition was officially opened on Monday afternoon at the Kaz Zanana art gallery in Victoria.

Invited guests such as the chief executive (CEO) of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) Alvin Laurence, the chairperson of Bling Bling Poetry Association Tony Joubert (aka Raspyek), Peter Sinon, who sits on FetAfrik committee, among others could appreciate the talented work of Seychellois poets.

Female poets such as Helda Marie, Nella Hoareau, Venida Marcel, among others were also in the limelight during the exhibition.

Mr Joubert (Raspyek) stated that such talented art work must be put in an exhibition so that everyone can appreciate the skills of those poets.

“Poetry is an expression of powerful feelings and imagination; we have chosen the theme ‘Opinion’ to empower Africa women. African poetry can be added to the oldest poem in literature. It is a large and complex subject, partly because of Africa’s original linguistic diversity but primarily because of the devastating effect of slavery and colonisation,” he said.

The exhibition was opened by Peter Sinon, who described it as a way to retrace our history and learn from it.

The opening ceremony also included poem recitals, and songs that showcased the true spirit of Africa.
