‘Be visible, be safe’ |24 May 2016

As part of activities to mark Road Safety Week, Playtime.Seychelles held a small exhibition during the weekend under the theme ‘Be visible, be safe’, promoting the use of reflectors and advising people on how to use them.

In the context of Playtime, the reflector they are promoting is a piece of glass, metal, or other material for reflecting light in a required direction, e.g., a red one on the back of a motor vehicle or bicycle, a keyring on a bag or an armband around the wrist.

Playtime.Seychelles is a non-governmental organisation promoting the child’s right to play as a human right. Its chairperson is Gunilla Holmberg.

“We want you to wear reflectors. Because reflectors save your life. It’s the cheapest life insurance ever. We wear these in Sweden and I sort of grew up with a band reflector on my arm,” said Ms Holmberg, who is Swedish.

The exhibition, held at the Central Post Office in Victoria, had fluorescent key rings, arm bands and a picture book “Kisisa en Reflector”. Ms Holmberg said Playtime does this reflector promotion for children.

“Be visible, be safe. Buy a pedestrian reflector and support our road safety project for Seychelles children and the printing of a picture book ‘Kisisa en Reflector’,” said one of the leaflets on display.

A person walking in lowlight conditions wearing dark clothes is first seen approximately 20-30 metres. In light clothes 60 metres. When it rains even less. With a reflector the visibility distance can be up to 125 metres. The reflector is best seen if it sits low and moves. To wear a pedestrian reflector is the cheapest life insurance.

Playtime engages in projects, workshops, information, fund-raising, collaboration, book publishing, national play archive and exhibitions.
