Christians mark the start of Lent |11 February 2016

A large number of Catholic faithfuls gathered at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception yesterday during lunch hour to commemorate Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Lent period.

Father David Alcindor, who was conducting the mass, said Lent period should remind the Christians of their obligations to one another and to God.

“We have begun the period of Lent as a reminder of our relationship with God. We start a new journey in Jesus Christ by repenting,” said Father Alcindor.

He advised Christians to support one another materially, spiritually, psychologically and to show kindness to the needy through their actions, gestures of good will during Lent.

For his part Father Frederique, who was co-presiding the mass with Father Alcindor, called on Christians to give and help others from the kindness of their hearts and with humility.

“A cross from ash made on your forehead is a sign that we are fragile and a sign that we are ready to repent during this period and to reflect on our relationship with others and with God. Do good deeds with humility,” he told all faithfuls present.

Ash Wednesday is observed across the world by many Christians to mark the beginning of the 40 days of Lent.  The lent period culminates in Easter celebrations, which mark the end of fasting.

The six-week period is dedicated to reflection, prayers and fasting in preparation for Easter. The ash, applied in the shape of a cross, is a symbol of penance, mourning and morality.

Here in Seychelles mass is held all throughout the day and at different times in all the churches around the country.
