Youth Hostel rewards best performing students |01 December 2015

The Youth Hostel at Anse Royale has rewarded its students who have performed well during the year.

A prize giving ceremony was held for that purpose at the ex-Manchester Hall of the University of Seychelles at Anse Royale.

The ceremony, which took place on Thursday evening last week, is an annual event and this year a new award –Best Improved Performer – has been added.

Jean Yves Rose clinched the Manager’s Cup for best overall student 2015. The cup is the most prestigious award offered by the hostel through its manager, Roger Alphonse.

The hostel provides accommodation for students from Praslin and La Digue who are following further studies on Mahé.

Present at the ceremony were members of the National Assembly for La Digue and the Inner Islands, Chantal Ghislain, and for Grand Anse Praslin Marc Volcère.

There were various awards on offer for both boys and girls. A mixed group of students won the prize for their dedication in remarkable ways and for best contributors towards the community.

The award for best boy and girl who have been a unit leader, promoted peace, good principles and cleanliness went to Jean Yves Rose and Daniella de Silva respectively.

Students who took part actively in activities organised by the hostel went to Dean Toussaint and Naomie Jeannevol.

In the cultural domain Ivan Vidot and Virginie Ernesta were the winners.

Best girl unit went to Block 4, Unit 4 whereas best boy unit went to Block 2 Unit 3.

Best overall unit for boys went to Block 2 Unit 3.

Overall best unit for both boys and girls went to Block 2, Unit 3.

Anand Pounikar won best effort for improved performance.

In a short address for the occasion, Mr Alphonse said the ceremony recognises the achievements of the students and serves to encourage them to continue to excel.

“To bring out the best in every student is the ultimate goal of education in general. This is the timeless objective. The future will be highly unpredictable and changeable. Academics owners alone will not be enough to prepare our children for the challenges in an increasingly uncertain world,” said Mr Alphonse.

In a special message to the students, Mr Alphonse told them they are lucky to have had the opportunity to stay together in such a set-up which he is sure will result in a more united spirit among them.

“It remains important that you clinch the opportunity to promote all-round education in order to continue developing your heart, mind and spirit,” added Mr Alphonse.

Besides recognising the students’ skills in many areas such as sports and culture to name some, the award ceremony also reflects the wider goals of the hostel which is to bring out the diversity of talents in the students.

Therefore he urged them, no matter what area they are good in, to maximise their strength and use the opportunities to be the best they can be.

Dances, songs and musical performances highlighted the evening.
