Free diabetes camp a success as many turn up |29 July 2015

Many turned up for tests during a free diabetes camp organised on Monday at Dr Murthy’s clinic in association with the Diabetic Society of Seychelles.

“This event coincides with the first year of remembrance of the passing of K.D. Pillay (aka Mr Deenu). We brought in a diabetologist, Dr Soumya Sengupta, from India to run a diabetes clinic till Friday. It is in our mandate to bring different specialists from various parts of the world according to the demand of the Seychellois,” said Dr Murthy.

On Monday, more than 100 people did their blood tests and other basic tests to know their health status.

“Some people found out that they have blood pressure problems and others got to know they have high blood sugar. It is a good camp as we are helping people to know their status and help them become more aware of their health status. This also helps to remove pressure on the Ministry of Health,” added Dr Murthy.

Dr Sengupta observed that “40% of the people who came today were already diabetic and there were some new cases. Awareness on this long-life disease is missing and they are only concerned about what medicines should they take. Diabetes is more than just only medicine; it is a way of life that we need to change. If we get the right info, this disease can be prevented.”

Dr Sengupta is receiving patients till Friday for paid consultancy and diabetic patients can also get their feet checked at Dr Murthy’s clinic.
