World No Tobacco Day - Exhibition highlights dangers of tobacco use |28 May 2015

Members of the public can have the chance to learn more about the dangers of tobacco use and its negative health effects through an exhibition being staged at the Orion Mall building.
Organised by the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church as part of activities to commemorate World No Tobacco Day, the exhibition was officially opened on Monday this week in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Health and from the SDA church, as well as other guests.

Through this exhibition, which will go on for one week, people will get the chance to see a compilation of works aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of tobacco use and its negative health effects. On display are videos on how to stop smoking as well as posters and leaflets carrying useful information on the negative effects of smoking.

Commenting on the exhibition, Pastor Nelson Joubert of the SDA said: “As the world rallies together on May 31 to commemorate the World No Tobacco Day as declared by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the SDA church wants to show through this exhibition the importance of living healthfully for a better lifestyle through Christ’s promise which states: ‘I have come that they may have life and they may have it abundantly’.”

He said the SDA church will be working closely with key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Health, Care (Committee for Awareness and Resilience against substance abuse), Drug and Alcohol Council, and ICPA (International Commission for the Prevention of Alcohol Drugs Dependency).

The aim of World No Tobacco Day, which is celebrated on May 31 every year, is to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco use around the globe. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative health effects.
