Carnival corner - Theme song sets the tone for the three-day extravaganza |14 February 2015
Only 69 days left before Seychelles welcomes the top carnivals of the world to its shores to join in the three-day celebrations in the heart of its capital town Victoria.
This year, we will be celebrating the fifth anniversary of our Carnaval International de Victoria, and surely the carnival will not be the same without its theme song.
Karnaval dan Victoria is the title of Seychelles’ new song which will be the hymn of this colourful and vibrant three-day event, which makes our islands stand proud among other nations of the world.
Young talented artist Trassy Carola, who goes by her stagename Telsy, is the first female singer to achieve such a feat, after Patrick Victor in 2011, Jean-Marc Volcy in 2012, Michael Savy aka Ion Kid in 2013 and Travis last year.
Receiving her prizes from the Seychelles Tourism Board’s chief executive Sherin Naiken, Telsy was very emotional.
“I was not expecting to win the first prize but I can say that I am very happy. I feel proud because I am the first female artist to win the carnival song contest,” she said.
“I have always wanted to take part in this competition but I never got the chance to finish the song in time, but this time I made sure to try my luck and I am glad that I did.”
Telsy wrote the zouk song Karnaval dan Victoria with the help of his father Terry Carola.
“Through the song I want to portray the unique way that the Seychelles’ carnival gathers countries around the globe, people of diverse cultures to our small capital of Victoria,” she added.
“I wanted to make a difference with the zouk rhythm I have chosen because I feel it reflects the Creole identity more than the salsa and the soca beats.”
Telsy has also echoed words of thanks to the STB for such an initiative which she said gives the local performing artists the chance to have more exposure.
