‘A world without art doesn’t have beauty’ |07 January 2015

During the course of 2015, the National Arts Council (Nac) plans to continue maintaining its success achieved during the past years, its chief executive has said.

Talking to Nation at the start of this New Year Jimmy Savy noted that during the course of 2015 the Nac also plans to reach out to artists and give more support to all forms of art in the country.

“We plan on working mostly with groups of artists rather than individuals so as to put together different projects,” Mr Savy explained.

“This year, among the different activities being planned is also an Arts Festival, where various artists will have the chance to display their talents,” Mr Savy added.

Mr Savy also pointed out that 2015 will also see the Nac’s first ever Arts Awards which is already being planned.

Mr Savy said that unlike the Cable Tunes Music Award and the Airtel Music Award which only focus on music, this Arts Award will encompass all forms of art, rewarding artists for their contributions to arts in Seychelles.

It is to be noted that when it was set up in 1991, among the Nac’s key priorities were to organise and coordinate the development of all art forms, promote local artists and help them showcase their work at all levels for the general public.

According to Mr Savy, there are many talented artists around in Seychelles who make their living through art. However, they are not recognised by society and this has a serious impact on their lives.

“And so, Nac is keen this year to help these artists get the recognition they deserve,” Mr Savy pointed out.

He said the Nac plans to do this through a series of workshops and several other activities which will help the artists to better manage their artistic work and gain more visibility in society.

As an inspiration to all artists Mr Savy has this to say: “Be proud of what you do, because a world without art doesn’t have beauty. Artists are responsible for making the world a more beautiful place.”
