A large group of enthusiastic kids came down to the beach at Côte D’or recently to take part in the children’s Subios Fun Day.

This activity was organised by the education section of the Ministry of Environment and Energy in partnership with the Seychelles Islands

Foundation (SIF) and Friends of Vallée de Mai Club.

Support was also provided by other organisations such as Global Vision International (GVI), SNPA (Seychelles National Parks Authority), White Tip Diving Centre, Octopus Diving Centre and Sagittarius Diving Centre.

A number of fun and marine based educational activities were planned on the beach for the children.  A group of 15 children were lucky enough to take a trip to Curieuse Island which was organised by Sagittarius Diving Centre.  This was a special trip for them as it was the first time that they had visited Curieuse. The children were delighted to see the Aldabra giant tortoises and learn more about the flora and fauna of the island.  They described their adventure as wonderful and unforgettable.

While this group was away at Curieuse the other children took part in some activities on the beach at Côte D’or. They had the chance to make colourful and creative marine Christmas cards. Some fabricated  key rings from flip flops that were found on the beach, and recycle craft which they enjoyed so much.
There was also a competition for the best marine themed sand sculpture, a team work of three children in a team. The children showed their creativity in making their Christmas cards and they used  the natural resources around them to make the cards as beautiful and distinctive as possible. The same for sea sculptures, though sea turtles, a species well admired by our children, were the most popular sea sculptures.

Another popular activity was body painting where marine species were painted on arms, face and back of the children.

White Tip Diving Centre were kind enough to organise a snorkelling trip to St Pierre Island, a popular marine park spot well appreciated by visitors.  The children who went spent almost two hours observing the marine life around this small island. Upon their return they talked so much about the small sharks, majestic rays and beautiful fish they spotted while snorkelling.

For those who could not swim and thus could not go to St Pierre, a snorkelling activity was organised in the shallow waters at Côte D’Or.  The Seychelles lifeguard officers were on site to ensure that all the activities in the water were carried out safely.

GIV staff also joined in with some other fun and energetic games on the shore and in the sea for the kids. The cloudy sky and rain from time to time went unnoticed by the enthusiastic kids who were having a good time, but at the same time learning about our marine environment.

After lunch the facilitators were left with the difficult task of judging the sand sculptures, Christmas cards and key rings. After much deliberation the group finally decided on the first three winners for each competition. Before it was time to announce the results Father Christmas made an appearance on the beach.  All the kids were very surprised and ran out of the water to meet him. Organisers took the opportunity to ask Father Christmas to give out prizes to the winners for the competitions organised.

In the end all the children were winners because all of them went home with a small souvenir.
What an exciting and successful day this turned out to be and not even the rain could stop the kids from enjoying it.
