Figaro, Stratonowitsch national champions
Dericka Figaro and Andre Stratonowitsch finished as the winners of the Venture Bay-sponsored National Chess Championship held last weekend at Eden Plaza, Roche Caïman.
The championship featured over 20 players with Germany, Russia, Philippines and India also represented along with the large Seychelles contingent.
Andre Stratonowitsch, who hails from Germany, finished as the tournament’s grand winner with seven points after winning all his games. Benjamin Hoareau had to settle for second position this time as he finished with six points after losing in round five.
Benjamin Hoareau’s sister Dericka Figaro was third overall with 5 points, but claimed the women’s title as she finished as the highest ranked female competitor. She was followed in second place by her mother Rachelle Hoareau with five points.
The competition also saw prizes awarded for the best under-14 players and here it was the trio of Russian Vesilen Kanchev, Anthony Jeremie and Ajay Vijay Kumar who were tied in first place, all with four points.
