Letter to the Editor - Local artist makes a valid point |21 October 2014

I listened with interest this morning to Mr Patrick Victor's interview with Mr Jude Louange on 'Bonzour Sesel' during which he expressed his opinion on our Kreol culture. I agree fully with him when he said that our Kreol culture is getting 'diluted', gradually losing its purity and its authenticity. In his own words, "Nou kiltir Kreol pe vin 'en fo kiltir' avek tou sa pake mo angle ki nou pe servi sak fwa ki nou pe koz Kreol". How right he is. I congratulate him for making this point as I have always felt the same way. There is no better and more competent person to voice his opinion on this facet of our Kreol culture than Mr Patrick Victor, an accomplished local artist himself who is deeply rooted in our culture that he promotes passionately and patriotically through his beautiful songs. I think his words must be taken seriously if we want to make a real success of our Kreol culture.

 Justice for all

Although it can be argued that a pension ought to be given to constitutional post holders - albeit for just a couple of years they spend in office in some cases -  there is still a greater need according to social justice to pay an adequate pension (not just a mere pittance) to many 'old timers' I know in the Teaching and Civil Service in general who have given - not just a few years - but so many years of their entire working life in serving their country devotedly, diligently and with dedication in many fields of society. This is all the more so pressing, taking into account the ever escalating cost of living. There is definitely a need to review pensions in their entirety, with special consideration of length of service, as was rightly pointed out by the Leader of Government Business during a recent National Assembly session.
