Creole Institute partners with UniSey |01 October 2014

Cultural studies to get big boost

The Creole Institute and the University of Seychelles (UniSey) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will allow the two institutions to collaborate in organising academic activities for the development of an intellectual culture in Seychelles.

The MoU was signed yesterday at the Creole Institute by its director Penda Choppy and the vice-chancellor of the UniSey Denis Hardy, in the presence of the Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange at Au Cap.

“This MoU will help the two institutions in the field of research with particular focus on culture and language and generally promote and nurture intellectual thought and production locally and within the Indian Ocean region,” Mrs Choppy said.

“Today is a landmark for the university. Language, history and culture are not simply at the heart of this partnership; they help to define the very identity of the nation as a whole. Let us see this as a unique opportunity to encourage future generations of students to explore more fully their own heritage,” Mr Hardy said.

He urged academics and practitioners alike to collaborate in research projects that will place Creole studies in a central position in the life of Seychelles, as well as other Creole-speaking societies in the rest of the Indian Ocean and around the world.

“I am sure that this new partnership will lead to all kinds of exciting developments,” added Mr Hardy.
