Indian Institute of Management builds leaders through transformative and innovative education |01 September 2014

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), which  is a bit similar to our own management institute here (The Guy Morel Institute), builds leaders through holistic, transformative and innovative education.

This was revealed to journalists from small islands developing states (Sids) who were recently on a familiarisation visit to India. They spent time at various Indian national institutions in both New Delhi and Bangalore, among which was the IIMB.

Being a recognised hub of academic activity both in India and globally, IIMB is known for excellence in research and scholarships. It was established in 1973 and since then has been a leading internationally post-graduate centre of management studies encompassing education, research and consulting.

The institute has also received international recognitions. It is the only Indian business school in the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) list that features Yale, LSE, INSEAD and other top business schools in the world.

It also ranks number one in the ‘Business and Management’ category of a Stanford study on Indian social science research – a study done by Professor Sharique Hasan of Standford University, Graduate School of Business, who based the rankings of Indian universities and institutes on productivity in social science research.

The school is led by a director, who is the head of the institution, and two deans. It is the first business school in Asia to sign an agreement with Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) to distribute faculty teaching classes.

“The students depend on the IIMB library for research which has a pool of resources comprising more than 2000 books. Most of the disciplines we develop collections based on interest. And we have more than 2000 outside members. We also provide remote access to people who want to work at home,” said Mr Mysore Jagadish, chief librarian at the institute.

He adding that they can advise students to come to study there under India’s Itech programme.

IIMB is also equipped with a hostel and has an international office which deals with foreign students. Located in a serene and peaceful environment very conducive to studying, the institute is constructed entirely of stone and is surrounded by a very well maintained garden full of flowers and shrubs.
