Athletics-Boniface smashes triple jump record

BONIFACE … new Seychelles triple jump record of 12.95m and gold medallist

Janet Boniface hopped, stepped and jumped over a new distance of 12.95m for a new Seychelles women’s triple jump record, erasing Beryl Laramé’s old best of 12.62m set on May 27, 2000 at Stad Popiler.

Boniface mustered this performance yesterday – on day two – at the Kenya National Athletics Championships at the Nyayo Stadium, in Nairobi, to win the gold medal.

On the opening day, Lissa Labiche claimed two gold medals in the women’s high jump (1.75m) and long jump (6m).

According to reports from Kenya, Labiche left the fans asking for more in the long jump when she leaped to 6m, beating Kenya’s Regina Mulatya (5.97m) and Cherotich Koech (5.67m).

Labiche double gold medallist in the long and high jump

The distance equals her Seychelles junior long jump record, but her high jump performance is 6cm below her junior and senior record of 1.81m set a week ago (on Saturday July 9) during in the combined National Championship and Junior Championship.

On the track, male sprinter Danny D’Souza is in today’s 100m final after clocking the second-fastest qualifying time of 10.60 seconds.  Alice Khan and Joanne Lou-Toy are also in today’s women’s 100m final.

Although not one male or female Seychellois athlete is in the 200m finals, Leeroy Henriette clocked a personal best of 21.70 seconds in the series on Thursday.
