Swimming-Shrone Austin, Viktora open championship winners |14 July 2009
Shrone Austin and Adam Viktora accumulated the highest number of points to win the women’s and men’s titles after three days of stiff competition in the Roche Caïman Olympic-size pool.
Sportswoman of the Year 2003 Shrone Austin won 11 of the 16 events she took part in to finish with 134 points – four more than her younger sister Shannon, who finished with 130 after five wins.
Shrone won the 200m freestyle (2:15.31), 400m freestyle (4:54.86), 800m freestyle (10:08.17), 50m breaststroke (40.95 seconds), 100m breaststroke (1:26.28), 200m breaststroke (3:06.47), 50m butterfly (34.11 seconds), 100m butterfly (1:12.41), 200m butterfly (2:45.84), 200m individual medley (2:45.66) and 400m individual medley (5:40.78) events, while last year’s winner Shannon, 16, triumphed in the 50m freestyle (29.89 seconds), 100m freestyle (1:03.84), 50m backstroke (38.15 seconds), 100m backstroke (1:19.57) and 200m backstroke (2:56.33).
Aurelie Fanchette was third overall with 72 points.
Like Shannon, outgoing male champion Shane Mangroo surrendered his title – to Viktora, who amassed 108 points.
The 12-year-old touched the wall first in the 400m freestyle (5:01.25), 1,500m freestyle (20:26:28), 100m backstroke (1:21.65) and 200m individual medley (2:43.53) events.
Winner of seven events – 50m freestyle (26.78 seconds), 100m freestyle (1:00.24), 200m freestyle (2:14.14), 50m backstroke (34.54 seconds), 50m butterfly (29.00 seconds), 100m butterfly (1:09.97), and 200m butterfly (2:48.56) – Mangroo finished second with 76 points and Ryan Govinden was ranked third with 61.
The other event winners were Dwayne Didon – 50m breaststroke (36.91 seconds) and 200m breaststroke (2:58.79) – Ron Roucou – 100m breaststroke (1:20.43) – and Dean Hoffman – 200m backstroke (3:18.77).
The swimmers could choose to compete in as many events they wanted. They were awarded points according to their final placings in each event, and the overall women’s and men’s winners were those with the highest accumulated points. This decision was taken at the last minute and most of the swimmers were not aware of it.
By this time, the registration forms had already been handed in for the competition, which ran from Thursday to Saturday.
Originally, it was decided that the overall winners were to be the swimmers with the highest Fina points in one event.
Therefore, most of the competitors decided to compete in events where they felt they could clock a good time to earn the highest points possible.
