Belonie school gets donation of benches |21 November 2017

The Seychelles Centennial Women Lions Club has donated six twin dining benches to the Belonie secondary school.

It was the president of the club, Sashi Senthi Kumar, who handed over the donation to the school’s head teacher Medgée Nancy in a small ceremony in the school’s dining room yesterday morning.

The students have now comfortable places to sit and enjoy their meals during tea break and lunch time.

The benches, which have cost R10,800, will also be used as a meeting point for students to study, discuss school work, do research work, as well as for relaxation.

The six twin benches which can cater for 12 students (six on each side or more), is fitted with a table in the middle.

The donation was a request from the school’s management as there was a lack of sitting facilities for students to have their snacks and lunch especially on rainy days when most students are seen standing up to have their meals.

The six new wooden benches which have beautified the school’s dining hall have been sponsored by the chairman of the Amusement Centre, Dr V. Ramadoss and the director of Swaminarayanan Builders, Mavji Gorasia.

Also present at the donation were the director general of Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Odile Octave, members of the Women Lions club, staff and students of the Belonie secondary school.

Head teacher Nancy said the donation has come at an opportune time when the school was in dire need of sitting facilities.

She thanked the Seychelles Centennial Women Lions Club for the generous donation and gave her assurances that the students will put the benches to good use.

“The students will now be able to sit comfortably during tea and lunch breaks and enjoy their meals peacefully. Furthermore they will develop their table manners as well as socialise with their peers,” she said.

Ms Nancy later told the press that the school is still in need of more benches and it has raised funds through a sponsored walk and together with other sponsors in line to help, the students will have more sitting facilities in future.

On behalf of the students, Jamelia  Gonzalves, member of the student’s body also joined the school’s head teacher in thanking the Seychelles Centennial Lions Clubs  for the donation.

Ms Kumar said they were happy to have contributed to the comfortable sitting arrangements for the students and thanked all those involved in the project which she cited as the third project that the Women Lions Club indulges in with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.

“I hope the six benches will be of good use to the children,” she said.

The Seychelles Centennial Women Lions Club also took the opportunity to announce its next charitable fund raising activity which will be a car boot sale at the Orion Mall on Saturday November 25. All are invited to come and buy something from the various cheap, good quality second hand products, ranging from house items to books and stationery.
