Photo contest winners rewarded

Secondary school students who excelled in a photo competition under the national theme ‘I Love Seychelles’ organised by the Seychelles Young Leaders’ Association have received their prizes.

The students were brought to various trails and they had the liberty to use their much loved gadgets such as phones and cameras in order to capture the natural beauty of Seychelles in its natural state.

The prize giving ceremony took place at the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (Site) where the beautiful photos highlighting our natural beauty were also on display in an exhibition.

Guests at the ceremony included the Minister for Labour and Human Resource Development Idith Alexander, the principal secretary for early childhood, primary and secondary education Merida Delcy, the vice-chairperson of Seychelles Young Leaders’ Association (SYLA) Myrna Bonnelame, among other guests and students.

The photo competition had two categories – the individual and the school categories.

In the individual category first prize went to Prayas Varsani from Plaisance secondary school. He won a camera set presented by Minister Alexander.

“When I took the winning photo, I was on a trail at Ros Sodyer with some friends. I used my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, to capture the wonderful splendour of Seychelles. Photography is like a pastime for me,” he said.

Second place went to Ashley Gabriel from Pointe Larue secondary school. She won a tablet.

In third place was Hernadelle Suzette, who won a house phone.

For the school category first prize went to Anse Royale secondary, followed in second place by Pointe Larue secondary, while Mont Fleuri secondary clinched third place. They all won a shield, a book on Seychelles and a pen drive.

There was also a special prize chosen by the jury, and that was won by Farah Mathiot from Anse Royale secondary.

Ms Bonnelame stated that since its launch in 2014, SYLA has organised several activities for the youths.

“This competition was launched for secondary schools. We had a total of seven schools and 40 photos. Through such competition the students managed to discover the beauty of Seychelles through photography,” she said.
